TOP TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE HOUSE MOVE
08/Mar/2016

We list our top tips to help you have a stress-free move.

Moving house is said to be one of the most stressful things in a person’s life but don’t despair, it doesn’t have to be … help is at hand, check out these tips to make the transition to your new home a little less stressful.

Removal Company

To save money during your move, be sure to compare costs of removal companies. Professional and experienced removal companies will arrange a pre-move visit to your property, inform them of your requirements so that they are fully prepared on the day. Check the company belongs to the British Association of Removers.

Plan Your Packing

-          Customise your packing boxes – use labels with a description of which rooms they’re to go in (top and side so easy to see when stacked) or colour code them.

-          Protect your furniture from knocks and scratches by wrapping them in cling film.

-          Screws from dismantled pieces of furniture, pop in a food and stick it to the relevant piece of furniture with masking tape.

-          Move your furniture into your new home first, otherwise you'll end up moving boxes around again to make room.

-          Forget putting clothes in suitcases – keep them on their hangers and cover with black bin liners so they can be hung up in your wardrobe straight away.

-          Instead of using bubble wrap or newspapers to wrap crockery and ornaments, use towels and bed linen to save any accidents.

-          Not sure where all the wires go for all your electrical device, take a photo so that you can refer back.

-          Pack a moving day survival kit of essentials to get you through the day – kettle, coffee, milk, a few mugs, water, snacks, phone charger, lightbulbs, small toolkit, first aid kit, etc.

Redirect Your Post

You can use the Royal Mail's Postal Redirection service to ensure that any post you've forgotten to change your address on still reaches you. Alternatively, you could leave a pile of stamped addressed envelopes so that the new owners can forward it on to you.

Meter Readings

Make a note of all meter readings before you leave and when you arrive at your new home and keep these somewhere safe. Also, check that all windows and doors are secure and water, gas and electricity supplies are switched off before leaving for the last time.

Share Your Experiences

Remember when you first moved into your home, what would have made things a little easier for you? You could leave a ‘new home’ instruction manual for those who are about to move in – leave instructions on top of appliances you are leaving behind, how to use the boiler, what days the bins are collected, etc. or alternatively, you could exchange telephone numbers or email addresses to tell them anything you may have forgotten.
